RADIO BAMBAMARCA

Since 1982, when Radio Bambamarca, which broadcast in the vicinity of 5657 kHz, was noticed by Latin American DX enthusiasts. Bambamarca, the capital of the Province of Hualgayoc, has been known as one of the active epicenters of out-of-band-shortwave stations in the Department of Cajamarca. It was in 1982 that the broadcasting activity began to boom in the District of Bambamarca. "Radio Bambamarca Empresa Individual de Responsabilidad Limitada", the first commercial broadcasting enterprise in Bambamarca, was established by Augusto Araa Morales. Radio Bambamarca, identifying itself as "voz y mensaje de la Provincia de Hualgayoc" (voice and message of the Province of Hualgayoc), was set up in order to facilitate communication with outlying districts in the Province of Hualgayoc through the airwaves. The station nominally broadcast on 5656 kHz with an output power of 0.1 kW. However, it was irregularly monitored by few DXers on the slightly variable frequency range between 5656.7 kHz and 5657. 5 kHz from 1982 to April of 1987.

Studio/Transmitting site: Plaza de Armas, Bambamarca, Provincia Hualgayoc, Departamento de Cajamarca, Per.

RADIO SAN FRANCISCO

Not long after Radio Bambamarca made its appearance on the airwaves, Radio San Francisco was briefly monitored by quite a few Latin American DX enthusiasts in 1984. Announcing with the slogan of "voz y mensaje de la juventud" (voice and message of the youth), the station seemingly broadcast for the young audience as its target. However, it broadcast mostly Andean folklore programming. The station announced that it nominally transmitted on 5560 kHz, though the outlet drifted considerably between 5483.4 kHz and 5787.5 kHz due to technical problems. In truth, the station was not widely heard anywhere in the world and its life of transmission was very short. During my stay in Bambamarca, I attempted to trace the undiscovered history of Radio San Francisco by talking to several people working at local broadcasters, but none of these people to whom I spoke could give me the information needed, such as the owner's name, the station facilities' location, or the programming. Afterward, I learned more from a book entitled "Radio y Comunicacin Popular en el per", which was issued by CEPES (Centro Peruano de Estudios Sociales) in March of 1987, in a brief section about Radio San Francisco in the article entitled "las emisoras campesinas de Bambamarca". It was located in Lalucn, one of the small communities in the District of Bambamarca. The station, which was managed by three cooperative investors, earned its income by the message services on airwaves for the people living in Lalucn and the other communities. While being active on airwaves, the station broadcast in two time slots: 1200-1700 (morning broadcast) and 2000-2200 (evening broadcast).

Studio/Transmitting site: Casero Lalucn, Distrito de Bambamarca, Provincia Hualgayoc, Departamento de Cajamarca, Per.

RADIO ONDA POPULAR

Radio Onda Popular was established by three members of same family: Carlos Enrique Minchan Ros, Segundo Minchan Ros and Felipe Minchan Arteaga. The station was first noted by DX enthusiasts in early November of 1986 on a measured frequency of 5273.8 kHz. According to the station identifications, Radio Onda Popular broadcast at 2300-0500 daily, operating on a nominal frequency of 5270 kHz with a transmitter of 0.25 kW. The first studio was installed at Prolongacin Alfonso Ugarte No. 127 in Bambamarca. Subsequently, its studio was transfered to Prolongacin Alfonso Ugarte No. 566. Radio Onda Popular was monitored on the slightly drifting frequency range between 5273.8 kHz and 5273.9 kHz from December of 1986 through late March of 1987. Then, the station had been out of service for about one year until its transmission was reactivated and moved up onto 5283.3 kHz in April of 1988. Subsequently, the station moved down to 5275.5 kHz, on which frequency it was irregularly heard from October of 1988 through February of 1989. Radio Onda Popular moved down onto 5186.8 kHz in June of 1989, on which frequency it remained until it was last traced by DXers in late January of 1989.

Studio: Prolongacin Alfonso Ugarte 566, Bambamarca, Provincia Hualgayoc, Departamento de Cajamarca, Per.
